El siguiente artículo es un intento por rastrear los orígenes que tuvo la devoción del Arcángel San Miguel en Puerto Rico por medio de las cofradías y su relación con comunidades afrodescendientes. De acuerdo con estudios afroatlánticos, desde el siglo XVII la presencia de portugueses en ambos lados del Atlántico posibilitó el intercambio de prácticas y devociones católicas que a su vez fueron reapropiadas por sujetos subalternos y racializados. La temprana presencia de cofradías afrocatólicas en Puerto Rico sugiere que, a través de festividades y performances rituales, estas organizaciones posiblemente fueron las protagonistas de que algunas devociones populares proliferaran alrededor de la isla. A partir del uso de fuentes primarias y secundarias, se plantea cómo ciertas prácticas afro-católicas y festividades negras, como en el caso de las Fiestas de San Miguel, fueron objeto de represión, primero, por parte de la Iglesia y luego por parte del Estado.
The following article attempts to trace the origins of the devotion to the Archangel Michael in Puerto Rico through confraternities and their relationship with Afro-descendant communities. According to Afro-Atlantic studies, since the seventeenth century, the presence of Portuguese on both sides of the Atlantic made possible the exchange of Catholic practices and devotions that were re-appropriated by subaltern and racialized subjects. The early presence of Afro-Catholic confraternities in Puerto Rico suggests that these organizations were possibly the protagonists of some popular devotions that proliferated around the island through festivities and ritual performances. From the use of primary and secondary sources, it is proposed how certain Afro-Catholic practices and black festivities, as in the case of the Fiestas de San Miguel, were subject to repression, first by the Church and then by the State.
