Exploring Cartagena's tourism industry: Insights from my internship at Corpoturismo
(Universidad de Cartagena, 2024-06-03) Zúñiga Torres, Valentina; Billat, Astrid Antoinette
Before starting my internship, I established several objectives to guide my development process within the internship site, as well as to ensure a meaningful experience. The most important one was to develop more communication skills, as in this new experience I was going to interact with a wide variety of people, including tourists and professionals in the tourism sector, very different from what I was used to in my academic environment. This objective was complementary to that of applying all the knowledge about foreign languages acquired throughout the academic formation. I also focused on learning about the functioning of the tourism industry in Cartagena and gaining a deeper understanding of its processes and dynamics, as this was a completely new subject for me. Therefore, working in the entity in charge of promoting tourism in the city represented a great opportunity. Finally, on a more personal level, I set out not only to fulfil my job responsibilities, but also to fully enjoy the whole experience. I committed myself to give my best to ensure success in all tasks and to always be ready to offer the necessary support to the entity. Being this my first entry into the working world, I wanted to make the most of it.

Navigating the logistics landscape: A journey of learning, growth, and reflection
(Universidad de Cartagena, 2024-06-03) Valle Amaris, Juan Camilo; Billat, Astrid Antoinette
Overall, I would describe my experience as a rollercoaster of emotions. Initially during the induction process, I felt a mix of anxiety and motivation. It became a reality that I was going to be part of the team, and I envisioned myself becoming as proficient as those I saw so focused during our tour of the different offices. After being assigned to the Exxon client team, "sponsored" by an experienced CSR, who would be my mentor for the next 3 months, reviewing and supervising my order processing, we were welcomed to the team and were immediately informed that there were high expectations of us since this was one of the company's main clients. This added some pressure but also motivation, as it was a challenge, and in my mind, there was no other option but to excel. As time went by, I received training in different processes, and with each training, I became more proficient. My effort paid off when, during the monthly meeting, a report on processed orders showed that I had processed around 330 orders in my first month. Seeing these numbers made me think that I was doing things right. The next challenge was the 3-month exam, which validated my transition from CSR Starter to officially being a CSR Data processor and being fully independent. After passing the exam, we were called to a room where we received feedback on our performance and were given positive aspects but also areas for improvement in order to continue progressing within the company.

Inside the professional world: Reflections and lessons learned from my internship
(Universidad de Cartagena, 2024-06-03) Pérez Espinosa, Jesús; Billat, Astrid Antoinette
During my first internship at the Hilton Cartagena Hotel, I was part of the reception department as a telephone operator. My main task consisted of answering external and internal calls to provide information or help with guests' needs. This involved acting as a concierge and handling all information related to the hotel's plans and rooms. In addition, I served as a bridge between guests and the other departments of the hotel, facilitating smooth communication and providing timely attention to visitors. My responsibility was to make sure our guests felt heard and to provide high quality service. Peace of mind was my best ally, as not all guests were friendly and some expressed themselves in a derogatory manner. In this position, I learned that we must always remain calm and, above all, respect the customer, setting clear boundaries. In addition to my responsibilities as a telephone operator, I also collaborated as an assistant in the reception area. I organized documentation and recorded check-ins and check-outs in the operating system used by the hotel, called Opera. I also had the opportunity to rotate through other areas, such as bellhops and executive tower service. During these experiences, I developed skills to be more attentive to details, solve problems in real time and be proactive. I attended monthly meetings where team goals were shared and progress was evaluated. My work was crucial when we faced major challenges, such as plumbing damage, power outages or heavy rains affecting the rooms. Learning how to communicate effectively and address people helped me to handle these types of situations effectively.

The dynamics of tourism from a foreign language student's perspective

Exploring the professional world: Lessons i have learned at my workplace.
(Universidad de Cartagena, 2024) Álvarez Beltrán, María Camila; Billat, Astrid Antoinette
University internships are crucial for academic and professional development. In this work, I reflect on my experiences during this period, exploring lessons learned and challenges overcome. From the classroom to the field, every moment has been an opportunity to grow and discover the professional world. This work represents the closing of an academic cycle and the beginning of a new phase of professional development. My case might be a bit different from my peers since I am validating my workplace as my university internship, which has presented significant challenges for me. I am working at Servicios Logísticos Cartagena S.A.S, where we support our parent company, Katoen Natie. Katoen Natie is a multinational company of Belgian origin, primarily focused on supporting large multinational companies with the transportation and storage of their products. The mission of the company is simple: creating maximum added value. Katoen Natie achieves this by providing tailor-made, full-service logistics and engineering solutions to a key number of customers worldwide. Currently, our four offices are located in the Torre del Puerto building in Manga, with around 70 people working towards the same goal: Providing the best customer service possible. In SLC, we primarily focus on providing support to our Katoen Natie warehouses in the United States and Canada, acting as data processors—the "front line" receiving our clients' requests. To provide a bit more context, the logistics sector of the United States is advanced and complex, supported by extensive transportation infrastructure, cutting-edge technology, and comprehensive services. Regarding my goals when starting to work at the company, my main objective was to learn more about the logistics sector, as it has always been where I wanted to work as a professional. It is a highly competitive sector not only locally but also internationally. Additionally, I was very curious to learn about the types of systems and databases (such as SAP and PLATO) that large companies use to track all movements of their products. This kind of knowledge makes me a more well-rounded and prepared professional while enriching my resume at the same time.
