dc.description.abstractEl mayor número de africanos esclavizados en América fue llevado a Brasil: cinco millones según algunas estimaciones, lo que convirtió a Brasil en la sociedad esclavista más grande de la historia en los siglos XVIII y XIX. Brasil también fue la última nación en abolir la esclavitud en 1888. El territorio igualmente albergó el número más grande de hermandades afrocatólicas, cerca de 165 en los siglos XVIII y XIX. Estas instituciones les permitieron a los afrodescendientes en todo el mundo ibérico aliviar las condiciones coloniales, permitiéndoles cuidar de sus enfermos y ancianos, y de enterrar sus miembros dignamente, entre otras formas de ayuda mutua. Este artículo examina las prácticas de manumisión de las hermandades afrocatólicas de Brasil colonial. Demuestra que los afrodescendientes se valieron esta institución laica para obtener la libertad de algunos de sus miembros. Sin embargo, esta actividad afroconfraternal ha sido poco estudiada. Sostengo que por mínimo que fuera su impacto, no podemos entender ni estas instituciones ni la esclavitud en Brasil plenamente sin tenerlo en cuenta.spa
dc.description.abstractThe largest number of enslaved Africans in the Americas was taken to Brazil: five million by some estimates, making Brazil the largest slave-holding society in history in the 18th and 19th centuries. Brazil was also the last nation to abolish slavery in 1888. The territory was also home to the largest number of Afro-Catholic brotherhoods, about 165 in the 18th and 19th centuries. These institutions enabled Afro-descendants throughout the Iberian world to alleviate colonial conditions, allowing them to care for the sick and elderly, and to bury their members with dignity, among other forms of mutual aid. This article examines the manumission practices of Afro-Catholic brotherhoods in colonial Brazil. It shows that Afro-descendants used this secular institution to obtain the freedom of some of their members. However, this Afroconfraternal activity has been little studied. I argue that however minimal its impact, we cannot understand either these institutions or slavery in Brazil fully without taking it into account.eng
