Backpacking through Cartagena: Challenges and learning experiences in local tourism

Abstract

Cartagena, with its historic charm and idyllic beach setting, has emerged as a leading tourism destination in Colombia. The growth of tourism in the city has not only managed to emerge on the international stage but has also forged stories of resilient businesses that have thrived in the changing landscape of the historic sector of the city. Among these stories is Backpackers Travel, a tour agency that forged its path from modest beginnings in 2015 to become a significant influence in local tourism. Throughout this report, we dive into the reality of tourism in Cartagena and our first glimpse into experiences as interns in Backpackers Travel's reservations and operations department. As we explore the dynamics of tourism in the city and the evolution of the agency, we show not only our daily routine of operations but also the adaptability and resilience of the company in the face of daily challenges in operating tours in the city.
