dc.description.abstractLa mucosa humana presenta diversas comunidades microbianas y ha sido estimado que más de 700 diferentes especies microbianas, son capaces de habitar en medio de interacciones sinérgicas, mutualistas y antagónicas entre los diferentes microorganismos, contribuyendo así al desarrollo y acumulación de comunidades polimicrobianas que forman una biopelícula denominada placa dental. Cuando el equilibrio microbiano es afectado, suceden en la biopelícula alteraciones que conllevan a enfermedades tales como la gingivitis, la periodontitis y la caries, las cuales afectan un gran número de personas. La caries dental es una enfermedad microbiana que sigue constituyéndo un problema de salud en todo el mundo, afectando mayoritariamente a la población adulta y escolar entre el 60% y 90% según la OMS en el 2007. Por lo tanto, dentro del amplio espectro de bacterias de la microbiota oral, el género Streptococcus spp. es el más importante y prevalente, siendo la especie mutans el principal agente etiológico relacionado con la caries. Por lo anterior, el objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la actividad antibacteriana de un enjuague bucal natural a base de los aceites esenciales de Lippia origanoides y Mentha piperita evaluando su aceptación organoléptica en un grupo de donantes voluntarios, analizando su citotoxicidad (ensayo MTT) y genotoxicidad (ensayo cometa) en cultivos in vitro de células HepG2 y evaluando su acción microbiológica. Posteriormente, fue evaluada la actividad antimicrobiana y comparada con un enjuague bucal comercial, además de valorar de la concentración mínima inhibitoria (CMI) frente a cepas ATCC de Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae y Pseudomona aeruginosa. El enjuague bucal presentó una efectiva aceptación organoléptica. Los resultados obtenidos en la citotoxicidad (ensayo MTT) demuestran que a bajas y altas concentraciones las células HepG2 pueden tolerar el aceite, para el caso de la genotoxicidad (ensayo cometa) las concentraciones más bajas sugieren una baja sensibilidad de las células HepG2 a L. origanoides. El enjuague bucal natural presenta actividad antibacteriana en las concentraciones de 5% y 10%. El método utilizado para valorar la concentración mínima inhibitoria (CMI) fue el de microdilución en caldo con placas de 96 pozos. Las cepas de S. mutans y S. aureus tuvieron un grado de inhibición a concentraciones de 50 mg/mL, 100 mg/mL y 150 mg/ mL, a diferencia de las cepas de K. pneumoniae y P. aeruginosa, en las que no hubo actividad inhibitoria.spa
