Peregrinaciones, espacios y mesianismo en El Evangelio del nuevo mundo (2021) de Maryse Condé

Abstract

El evangelio del nuevo mundo (2021), de la autora guadalupeña Maryse Condé, se inscribe en la tradición de reescrituras de la vida de Cristo, muy extendida también en la literatura caribeña francesa de los siglos XX y XXI. Esta tradición sigue el modelo del “relato del salvador”, en cuyo centro ubica la idea del viaje, la peregrinación y el regreso. Así Pascal, el protagonista de Condé, que a pesar suyo es un mesías, nace en las Antillas, las abandona varias veces en su búsqueda personal y de salvación para morir a la edad de Cristo y resucitar después. De hecho, El Evangelio visibiliza dos aspectos centrales de la literatura (afro)caribeña: el viaje y el espacio social poscolonial. En este artículo me propongo estudiar la doble importancia del viaje y de la misión salvífica del protagonista. Para ello, me centro en los viajes de Pascal desde la perspectiva de los espacios relacionales transamericanos y Sur-Sur que estos establecen, así como en el potencial espacio-poiético de esta búsqueda mesiánica. En efecto, el análisis se basa en el concepto de colonialidad, en la noción de la función estructuradora de la topología de los textos narrativos y el espacio fenomenológico, considerando también la abundancia de referencias intertextuales que habilitan la comprensión del texto como un cuento filosófico moderno.

The Gospel according to the New World (2021/2023) by Guadeloupean author Maryse Condé is part of the tradition of rewritings of the life of Christ, which is also widespread in 20th and 21st century French Caribbean literature. This tradition follows the pattern of the “savior narrative” while putting the idea of the journey, the peregrinations, and the return in its center. Thus, Condé’s protagonist and spiteful messiah, Pascal, is born in the Antilles, leaves them several times in his personal and salvific quest only to die at the age of Christ and then resurrect. Indeed, The Gospel gives visibility to two focal points of (Afro)Caribbean literatures: those of the journey and the postcolonial social space. In this paper, I propose to explore the dual importance of the journey and the protagonist’s salvific mission. To do so, I focus on Pascal’s travels in terms of the transamerican and South-South relational spaces they establish as well as the spatio-poietic potential of this messianic quest. Indeed, the analysis is based on the idea of coloniality, the notion of the structuring function of the topology of narrative texts and phenomenological space while considering the abundance of intertextual references that can push our understanding of the text to that of a modern philosophical tale.
