For much of the twentieth century, Afro-Panamanians of Caribbean descent fought against ideologies and policies that attempted to deny them access to not only nationality but the very status of humanity. This article focuses on the activism of journalists, teachers, organizers, and community leaders in the fight against practices of denationalization, segregation, and exclusion in Panama and the United States. In particular, I pay attention to how we can investigate these topics, using as an example the observations and reflections that emerged while I was writing my book Panama in Black. What follows is an invitation to think about how we talk about activism by Black communities, especially when we recognize that xenophobia, white supremacy, and anti-Blackness have been and continue to be constant realities.  eng
