Marcas del reconocimiento y la diferencia : Jean Debret y el lugar del negroafricano en la “marcha progresiva de la civilización en Brasil”, 1816-1831.

Abstract

Esta propuesta busca identificar marcas asociadas al cuerpo y al uso de la indumentaria que sirvieron para clasificar, identificar y articular una narrativa en torno a la población africana que habitó el Brasil Imperial de comienzos del siglo XIX. A partir del análisis del Voyage pittoresque et historique au Brésil, publicado por Jean Baptiste Debret entre 1834 y 1839, es posible identificar un conjunto de mecanismos de diferenciación y reconocimiento que informaban y actualizaban discursivamente los fundamentos de la diferencia, al tiempo que la estabilizaban mediante la idea de nación. Inscritos en el cuerpo -a través del pelo, la proporción de las formas o el uso del color- y presentes en la indumentaria - mediante el uso de sombreros, petos, zapatos y joyas-, se plantea que estas marcas sirvieron para señalar un tipo de estatus social y laboral vinculado al proyecto del progreso del Brasil, el cual iba más allá del tono de la piel o a formas particulares de ascendencia.

This article seeks to identify marks associated with the body and the use of clothing that served to classify, identify, and articulate a narrative around the African population that inhabited Imperial Brazil in the early nineteenth century. From the analysis of the Voyage pittoresque et Historique au Brésil, published by Jean Baptiste Debret between 1834 and 1839, it is possible to identify a set of differentiation and recognition mechanisms that informed and discursively updated the foundations of difference while stabilizing it through the idea of the nation. Inscribed on the body -through hair, the proportion of the shapes or color uses- and present in clothing -through the use of hats, bibs, shoes and jewelry-, these marks served to indicate a type of social and labor status linked to the project of the progress of Brazil, which went beyond the tone of the skin or to particular forms of ancestry.
