Este trabajo busca conocer las peripecias para mantener limpia la Plaza Mayor de Lima colonial que era el espacio público más ocupado de la ciudad. Además, una zona de encuentro, de recibimiento y, sobre todo, el mercado más importante de la capital. Muchos tipos de vendedores la ocupaban y estaba zonificado, por ejemplo, los cajones de Ribera rodeaban parte del palacio virreinal, las vivanderas en el centro, los ranchos o barracas frente al portal, almotacenes de ropa vieja frente al cabildo.  Un plano de la misma existió, pero no ha llegado a la actualidad. La limpieza de este espacio público fue asumida por el cabildo, los virreyes, algunos vendedores y finalmente por la institución ilustrada de la intendencia de policía, a través de las rentas de los bienes del cabildo, del prorrateo o cuotas entre los responsables de la basura generada que impedía la libre circulación de acequias y a veces de sisas o impuestos. Una licitación para la obtención del arrendamiento de toldos y asientos para las diversas actividades públicas realizadas en la Plaza Mayor tenía entre sus obligaciones la limpieza de la basura generada por los vendedores de la Plaza Mayor.
This work seeks to know the incidents to keep the Plaza Mayor of colonial Lima clean, which was the busiest public space in the city. In addition, a meeting and reception area and, above all, the most important market in the capital.
