Las huellas textuales de Estevanico en el archivo colonial del siglo XVI

Abstract

Este ensayo propone una aproximación a textos del siglo XVI que mencionan a Estevanico, hombre nacido en Azamor, noroeste de África, quien llegó a las Américas como cautivo haciendo parte de la expedición de liderada por Pánfilo de Narváez a la Florida en 1527 y terminó liderando la primera expedición española al norte de la Nueva España en 1539. Dialogando con algunas ideas que Michel-Rolph Trouillot propone sobre el sujeto en Silencing the Past (1995), argüimos que Estevanico deja huellas de sus acciones en textos escritos desde formas de escritura para las cuales él está en principio destinado al silencio. En este sentido, él deviene sujeto que impugna la gramática colonial desde la cual dichos textos son escritos.

This essay proposes an approach to texts from the Sixteenth century that mention Estevanico, a man born in Azamor in northwest Africa, who arrived to the Americas as member of Pánfilo de Narváez’s expedition to Florida in 1527, and became later the leader of the first Spanish expedition to the north of the New Spain in 1539. Advancing on some ideas about that Michel-Rolph Trouillot discusses about the “subject” in Silencing the Past (1995), we argue that Estevanico leaves footprints of his actions in texts that are written from a way of writing for which he is condemned to the silence. In this sense, he becomes a “subject” that challenges the colonial grammar that produces those texts.
