In this article I use meta studies on morphosyntactic development as a point of departure, as well as data from the typological corpus The world atlas of language studies (WALS), and its distinctive features search tools, to discuss the validity of grammaticalization paths and other morphosyntactic changes. I will discuss their occurrence in Romance languages, and whether cognitive diachronic theory has sufficiently considered 1) morphosyntactic developments in “peripheral” languages, that is, non-Indo-European languages and Romance varieties that differ from standard varieties, and 2) exceptions to expected paths. I will finish discussing the importance of unidirectionality (and its limitations) in a cognitive diachronic theory and focus on the importance of linguistic changes that do not occur (see, among others, Reinöl y Casaretto, 2018).eng
