A pesar de que Castillo Santillán fue presidente de dos principales organizaciones de la comunidad afroporteña—la asociación mutualista La Protectora y el famoso Shimmy Club—ha permanecido, hasta ahora, una figura desconocida. Este trabajo también da a conocer que Castillo Santillán fue la verdadera persona detrás de un mítico personaje del tango conocido solamente como “El Pardo Santillán”. Los recorridos de Castillo Santillán ayudan a expandir nuestro conocimiento de la sociedad afroporteña del siglo veinte y refutar los mismos discursos de invisibilización que habían intentado ocultar los desempeños de Castillo Santillán y la comunidad a la que pertenecía.This article attempts to reconstruct the trajectories of Tomás Castillo Santillán—a leading afroporteño figure and legendary tango dancer—during the first two decades of the twentieth century. Even though Castillo Santillán was president of two main organizations of the Afroporteño community—the mutual aid association La Protectora and the famous Shimmy Club—he has remained an unknown figure until now. This article also reveals that Castillo Santillán was the real person behind a mythical figure in the history of tango, known only as “El Pardo Santillán”. Castillo Santillán’s trajectories help expand our knowledge about Buenos Aires’s Afrodescendant society in the twentieth century.
